Tutorial Series: Foundation Application; Brush or Sponge?
Welcome to the first of my mini series of basic tutorials. This post will discuss whether sponges or brushes are better for applying foundation. As a general rule, sponges are faster and easier to use, but can soak up some product. It can be hard to find a brush that gives a finish you like, but once you do it can be hard to use anything else.

I’ve tried using different sponges and brushes to apply by foundation, and have worked out that my favourites are the Beauty Blender and the Sigma F80 Flat Kabuki. Before I had the F80 I was always a sponge user, but now I like to mix it up, and will often use a mixture of both… but which is best?

I decided to put them both to the test, the same foundation, at the same time. Half of my face using the F80 and the other using the Beauty Blender.

As you can see from the video, the finished result was pretty close, and overall I can achieve a similar result from both.

The one area I noticed the Beauty Blender perform better was around my nose, I found the brush couldn’t get into the small crease as well so the foundation clumped there and on the small piece of skin around my nostril. It looks quite subtle in the photo, but I couldn’t have left it unblended as it was more obvious to the naked eye.

For this test I would have to say the Beauty Blender wins for an all over flawless finish, with no touch ups needed, and I would definitely recommend it for beginners.

This doesn’t mean I won’t be using my F80 any more, different foundations work better with different tools and different skin types, and with thinner foundations I’ve preferred the coverage when using my brush.
